In Uglies the only way to escape your surgery is to run away, to a place called the Smoke. That's exactly what Shay does, she doesn't care about her surgery so she leaves to be with her friends, who had also left previously before they had their surgery. The Special Circumstances weren't really that happy about Shay leaving, so they looked to Tally. They knew how much she wanted to be a Pretty and they used that against her until she told them what she knew about Shay’s disappearance. Tally helped them, only because she wanted to be pretty so much, that she chose her looks over her friends happiness. Shay had this philosophy that everyone didn't need the surgery, because they were normal. “We’re not freaks, Tally. We’re normal.
