Uga Lsap Reflection

Ever since being a part of this lab, I have had much of a learning experience. My research focused on genetically fine mapping a specific region of a gene in pearl millet plants that translates into bristle production. This required me to plant and maintain F2 seedlings and screen them for recombination. I would not have known how meticulous every task in an experimental procedure must be before I started working in this lab. Having this role has taught me persistence even with issues with results.

Being in charge of meetings, conducting programs for residents, being the authoritative figure, and writing conduct reports is very intensive. However, having all of those responsibilities every day in college is an experience I could have never fathomed possible. It has taught me to be more grateful for my life than any other time because I am blessed to be able to impact on other's lives.
LSAMP
UGA LSAMP has been much of an aspiring experience. This alliance primarily consists of workshops for students focusing on the research field for minority students. The STEM field is an innovative field that not enough minorities are taking advantage of. I learned to embrace and promote diversity in the workplace/research because diverse minds working together have a greater chance to solve some of the biggest problems in this world. Guest speakers have inspired by being the model standard to live by.

The experience so far has been interesting. Getting the chance to work with nurses and work a small fraction of the intensive work that they do each day is very rewarding. On February 4th and 5th I had an ICU rotation to 3 South at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital which is a surgical ICU unit. The unit I am usually on is 2900, which is a Cardiac ICU at the same Hospital. Both units being ICU, I wasn’t sure how much a difference there would be between the two. However, there was a big difference between the two ICUs. Of course some things were the same, such as the layout of the unit (the pods, computers, and medication rooms).…

At Xavier University we believe in the “All for One and One for All” philosophy; showing that camaraderie and equality among all are still possible. One way Xavier lives up to its support for students is through the one-year long Smooth Transition mentoring program. I served as a smooth transition mentor to three incoming first-year students during the 2016-2017 academic year. In order to ensure that they have a successful first year at Xavier, I informed them about the resources Xavier University provides, including the writing center, mathematics lab, tutoring services, Ohio link, and much more. I also advised them to make good decisions and form relationships with people who would motivate them to succeed.…

    Black Women In America

Our experiences in both school and work often serve to alienate us from people of other genders and races as opposed to being a basis for finding acceptance and unity. As a result of this, we create our own businesses and safe spaces to celebrate our own accomplishments and talk about our own experiences; hence the surge in private ownership and entrepreneurship amongst black females in America. Although this is a positive for the community, the lack of black women in the STEM field remains a vast problem, especially for girls like me who wish to pursue a career in that field. It is my duty as a black girl in STEM to uplift and encourage other black girls with similar interests to continue on in with their aspirations, in spite of resistance, as I will do. It is my duty to demystify the picturesque image of intelligent black women in science and to assure my peers that the intelligence we associate with white masculinity is something that we, too, possess.…

Over the past four years, I have been going to a STEM+M school, whose goals are to make the world rethink education and diversify learning. Instead of focusing on books, memorization, and testing, the school focused on preparing kids for college, real-world application, and cultural education. I think this gave me a unique way of looking at things, especially with all of the different styles of learning I took part in. This type of educational and intellectual diversity allows me to offer a different perspective to groups and problems that others do not have.…

When thinking of getting involved on campus, it may seem overwhelming at first due to heavy emotional ties with feeling not belonged, but it is imperative for a 1st generation student to challenge these afflictions with affirmative action. However, the importance of these needs can often be taken for granted when they do not impact us directly, which forces us to respond to them as they arise.
