I use leadership skills as I train new medical scribes in position at UCLA’s Orthopedic Surgery Clinic. I have currently trained three scribes and a fourth scribe was just hired. There was no formal training program when I began, so I took initiative to fill this need. Training individuals with varying levels of experience requires flexibility. For example, one of my trainees did not have clinical experience and on his first day, he watched as I held a six-year-old’s hand as the resident reduced his fracture in clinic. Although it was an intense first day, I prefaced him before the reduction and went over the experience with him afterwards.
