Unemployment has caused problems to many families. Most people may just think unemployment may cause the families to struggle financially. According to Uchitelle in his essay “The Consequences- Undoing Sanity”, He discusses how being laid off can negatively affect their psychical and psychological health. He tells a story of a man who has been laid off, so his wife bought him a house to fix up while he was not working. He wife had no faith in him to finish the house. The man then did sixty percent of the work and let the house sit for a year. Then later started the house again, He finished the exterior, but let the interior alone. Sheeran Paschal, Dominic Abrams, and Sheina Orbell conducted a study. It was to see the relationships between layoffs, self-esteem, and depression. They conducted the study with questioners, they interpreted if the person was intrapersonal or interpersonal, this helped tell how social they are. Later, they were asked their employment status. Once the questioners were complete, they discovered that intrapersonal and interpersonal is related directly to depression and self-esteem. The group who are interpersonal, keep to themselves tend to have lower self-esteems, compared to the intrapersonal group. After this finding, they realized that majority of the interpersonal group was unemployed. This study proves that there is a direct correlation between unemployment and depression and self-esteem level. Socialization is key to us, the study makes perfect sense. If we don’t socialize, we get depressed and feel unwanted. Their self-esteem drops because they do not think anyone pays them attention. When people are at work they feel as if they are there for a purpose, and are doing their part to contribute to the company. So once they get laid off from the company, their self-worth will go down because there was no actual need for them in the end. When one of my family members was unemployed, she was never worried about looking for a job. She just kept herself busy, doing stuff around the house, cooking, and cleaning. Once a month past, she started to sleep in late, and just watched television all day. She would not even want to go out with her friends. She was not herself anymore. I could never imagine this happening to me. When going to work, I feel like the children look up to me. If I woke up and did not have that one day, or never was able to do that anymore, it would make me feel disappointed, and worthless. Self-worth means a lot in someone’s life, without having a moderate self-worth, they wouldn’t be able to overcome the obstacles in daily life. Self-esteem and self-worth go hand and hand. If you value yourself, you will have a more positive image, and care about yourself
