Steven Barnhart has potential. After a little bit of a bumpy start, he got the hang of the system and how to operate Trello and BLOX. He was consistently prompt in letting me know which stories he planned on editing in his workflow. He responded in a timely manner and was able to catch some errors. However, I believe that there is a lot of room for growth. I believe that this was a good opportunity for him to get his hands dirty and gain experience. Barnhart edited five stories that were published and three that were archived.

There was one story that Barnhart was working on with the reporter that did a lot of back and fourth. As of toady, April 25, “UCF Youth Vote” is back in the reporter’s workflow and I am unsure if it will be published. However, Barnhart provided detailed changes and suggestions for the article more than once. He is doing an excellent job.

Should review the style set fourth by the organization she edits for. NSM requires years and majors of all students quoted in the stories and there were several times when the story would be promote to copy chief without that information. Always double check names of organizations and sources quoted in stories. There were usually a few misspellings that could have been easily corrected if the student fact checked.

In 1968, the Marching Tar Heels of the University of North Carolina (UNC) released a 7-inch 33 ½ rpm record consisting of eight school songs including “Here Comes Carolina,” “Carolina Fight Song,” and UNC’s alma mater “Hark the Sound.” Past UNC students wrote and composed over half of the fight songs featured on the album, and the student marching band performs the same songs today, nearly five decades later. In fact, the band and fans conclude each game with “Hark the Sound,” linking arms and singing the lyrics a UNC student wrote over 100 years ago in 1897. As the “Go Tar Heels!” exhibit exemplifies with this piece, a game is about more than the athletes.…

In Texas, elections are a battle between two parties- the Democrats, and the Republicans. Independent parties exist, but do not have major impact during the elections. Over 90 percent of voters in Texas are made up of republicans or democrats which contributes to the lack of influence from Independent parties. For this reason, the process discussed focuses on these two parties.…

“The Republicans should pray for rain.” This is a commonly used phrase among the political sphere, and often is upheld as a truism. However, there is little empirical evidence that leads to a concrete decision on the truthfulness of this statement. The article, The Republicans Should Pray for Rain: Weather, Turnout, and Voting in U.S. Presidential Elections, opts to put an end to the confusion surrounding the accuracy of inclement weather negatively affecting voter turnout.…

I don’t know how the wonderful music history of Memphis pass me by but somehow It did! I have always heard that Memphis is known for its music history, especially the blues, but I never investigated the theory for myself. The instructor at the college challenged me to write a paper about the history of the Stax Museum in a reflection paper and I am really glad she did. It influenced me to finally take the time to view the history of Memphis firsthand starting with the Stax Museum. The research, museum, and the informative information my teacher taught in class helped me to learn the original name of the company, showed me the good and bad experiences with the company, taught me the meaning of music terms in the music company and lead me to…

Initially, I was under the impression that this class was going to be a joke. I had lived in the South for 21 years and thought I already knew everything about the South. After reading Dr. Eckard’s syllabus, I knew this was not going to be the case. From religion to southern dialect, this class presented the opportunity to learn more about the South that I had been exposed too. My three favorite posts this year was the discussion of family and gender, religion in the South, and The Evening Hour.…

In America, citizens are given the right to vote and elect officials into office. At the age of eighteen, young adults are allowed to register to vote and take part in elections. Not all citizens participate and decide to vote. When Americans decide to exclude themselves from voting, they initially are negatively impacting society. Thomas Patterson takes his stance on this when he wrote “The Vanishing Voter”.…

The common voter can’t have much effect on government and its policies. A majority of the states remain true to a certain political party, and only a few hundred people rarely affect states that don’t. However, if one wants to exceed beyond the role of the common voter, they can have an effect on the government. One can attempt to convince thousands of people in a swing state to vote for a certain candidate, one can schmooze their way into the government and create a difference there, and one can organize something opposing a policy that creates the illusion that that policy’s distasteful, without even knowing it. Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

For years, voters of the presidential elections have been asking the question, “Does my vote count?” The answer to this question is yes. However, the votes cast by the American citizens are not the deciding factor in which presidential candidate wins the overall election. Votes casted by the public are instead counted toward whom the Electors of the Electoral College will vote for. The candidate the Electors vote for is meant to reflect the popular vote of the state; therefore the Electoral College system is a secure, fair way to elect the President while supporting federal procedures.…

Sixteen year olds pay taxes, drive, and are allowed to drop out of school, so why can’t they vote also? Voting age in the United States is currently eighteen years old, although teenagers younger than that are still required to do many things that are controlled by how people vote on the ballots. I believe that the voting age should be lowered to sixteen years of age. If the voting age were lowered, it would allow schools to encourage voting, and even educate students about the process before they go to the polls.…

In the 2000 presidential election, most people were prepared to accept that Al Gore would be the next president even though he would likely lose the popular vote. However, the opposite happened. George Bush won the presidency through a small margin of electoral votes, but had lost the popular vote of the people. This election is an example of how the Electoral College diminishes the importance of the votes of the people. Most people know of the electoral college, they have read about it in their U.S. Government textbooks or have heard it mentioned in a political news broadcast, but some people are unclear on how much power the electoral college possesses; it is the electors who have the power to elect the President of the United States, not…
