In Dave Galehouse’s article “Why College Athletes Do Not Succeed”, he states that “Student-athletes don’t realize the time and effort commitment that they are getting involved in and the sacrifices they are going to make. After classes and practices, student athletes are left with very little free time to do school work and be social with their friends” (Galehouse). It might appear to make someone more well-rounded, but it is not always apparent the amount of stress and fatigue that come with it. Jackson Van Arsdale gives a first person perspective of the difficulties associated with being a college athlete in his article “The Life of a Student Athlete”, he stated “ You are not only behind the rest of the class, but you are on the road. You have to teach yourself the missed material from the back of a bumpy bus, an airplane, or in the computer room of the hotel” (Van Arsdale).…
RC1 Reaction Comment Lorrie Thomas, The first day of class was so informative and I experienced emotions from surprise, interest, fear, humor, sadness, etc., as explained in this reaction comment. One point of discussion, which surprised me, was how much I was unaware of the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) mission. I have said for the past 2 years that I would like to work for DHS.…
Students in high schools had teachers instructing and advising them on what, how, and when to do their schoolwork; however, in university students have the freedom and each one is responsible for him/her self. Although majority of students enjoy this lack of restrictions at first, but several feel overwhelmed, confused, and find difficulties in making decisions, taking responsibilities, and finishing all the work they were assigned with. Lastly, few students fail some classes due to a combination of their inability to adapt to the fast-paced life of undergraduates, their nonexistent time management skills, and procrastination as well as all of the problems mentioned…
On August 24, 2008, I began my first year of college at Tidewater Community College (TCC) pursuing a science associate degree and changed my major to applied associate of science with a concentration in Administrative of Justice. For the six semesters, I continually maintained a 3.0 or better GPA along with being apart of the Dean’s List twice. However, my last semester I had failed to uphold my academic commitment due to working full-time to support my myself financially through school. I was not able to effectively manage my time. Therefore, my overall GPA become out to be a 2.9 upon graduation.…
Hello. How are you? I am writing a letter to ask you to support me regarding my academic probation. I want you to petition for the Committee of Graduate School that let me have one more semester that I can escape from academic probation.…
To whom it may concern: This letter is to request my reinstatement to University of Maryland University College. My poor academic performance was not just a bad reflection of myself but also of what knowledge I should have been able to show I learned from taking intriguing classes. I have never been a person to give up and usually go full force with anything I would like to pursue. This may not be the best description; however, I believe I may have hit my own version of a mid-life crisis.…
I am writing to appeal my Faculty Scholarship at Our Lady of The Lake University. In my first semester of 2014-2015 academic school year I obtained a GPA of 1.76. Regardless of the difficulties I had transitioning from high school to college, I admit, my GPA being that low is my entire fault. In the fall I simply did not know what it took to be a successful college student.…
Before taking SGST 200 class, I had a very narrow view of sexualities and gender’s problems, but I was fine with that for such a long time. Even when I decide to take this class, I wasn’t expecting to change or have a whole new view of problems like racism, sexism, and homophobia. In SGST200, I learned that there is nothing wrong with being different from others, we should be proud of ourselves and be respectful to others. We can’t change the biological diversity; everyone is different since they are born and they have rights to choose what they want to be.…
Students who may have several practices or games in one week must be able to stay on top of their school work. Those practices and games force student-athletes to start their school work before practice rather than after. Finally, “Set up a daily list and arrange your priorities according to the order of importance to your mission,” (Ngari). It is necessary for students to…
Part A: This experience was different. Getting to work with other people outside of the department was fun and hard at the same time. The visual department students had a project to take our poems put them to video about a topic. My group chose the topic surrounding the election.…
Last year I became Vice President of Student Organization of Latinos (S.O.L). Before S.O.L the only club I had been a part of was Heath Occupation Students of America (H.O.S.A) a Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO). Becoming Vice President of S.O.L was something novel to me, I had no experience being a co-leader of any club but I wanted to try something new and was willing to give it my all. I knew it was going to be a challenge because S.O.L was only being established at our school and it was the club’s first year.…
The past semester at buffalo state college has been a stressful one. The transition of going from high school to college was very different for me. I was very used to someone being on top of me and making sure that I was always getting my work done. So now being in a college world where you are completely dependent on yourself, I see now that you must be far more aware of what is going on around you in order to stay on top of what you are doing and making sure that you are successful in all aspects of college. Although I had an adjustment issue, one of my eldest cousins who lived at home with my family has bipolar tendencies and they can sometimes become very serious.…
Walla Walla University is centralized around its Christian beliefs, striving to bring out the talent that God has given to every student. As far as colleges go, I hold Walla Walla University in the highest regard. Being a Christian myself, I have come to cherish this Christian atmosphere and thirst for knowledge at Walla Walla. It is in this respect that I have for the University that I write this candid letter. I write this letter as an appeal for my readmission decision of the Spring of 2016, but even more so, to give my dream school another chance.…
Yesterday I received a letter of dismissal from DePaul school of nursing. I am aware that my grades have been low for the last two semesters in which I take full responsibility. I write this appeal letter to explain the cause and ask you to please consider reinstating me. I wish to state that my poor grades are not due to low ability or not being able to retain the material. Neither was it procrastination to study.…
Several studies show that the most valuable and important time commitment in a course was the time actually spent in the classroom.(Schiming) Some other valuable and important time commitments included the time spent in discussion sections that complemented the lectures, and the time spent studying outside of class preparing for the class itself.(Schiming) That study concluded that the most productive time spent in any course was in the classroom; and that time had the greatest positive impact on the students’ performance. Another study of similar motives was taken on the most significant activities the impacted the students’ performance in any given course. The results of that study showed the idea that the most important learning takes place in the classroom and that students who do a conscientious job on a daily basis preparing for and participating in class perform better than students who skip class and try to cram for exams.(Schiming)…
