2) Why do you want to be a UCSB tour guide?
The first tour I had ever been on was at UCSB. I remember being nervous and not knowing what to except. The only college I knew anything about what UC Berkeley, and that was because I live five minutes away from the campus. Walking on to the lawn, I was unsure which tour guide to choose, so I went with guide who had the biggest smile. After my tour, I knew I had made the right choice. I was shown all the various parts of UCSB by someone you could tell was in love with the campus. My guide was not only warm and approachable, but he was able to share his love of the campus. Over the past few weeks I have fallen in love with my classes, my fellow gauchos and the campus. I want to be able to show perspective students why I could not be happier with my decision to go to UCSB.

I am overall an outgoing and bubbly person. Through my four years on my high school’s student government I have given tours to freshmen each year at their orientation and I gave tours to our alumni. I do not get timid or shy during public speaking and in fact I absolutely love it. I also worked as a Program Director at the camp I have worked at for the past four years. I attended a seminar at the business school last year called the Midwest Undergrad Business Summit where many very talented speakers spoke. However, Dr. Laplante stood out to me. He gave a speech on capitalisms. The first thing I noticed about him was his clear passion for the topic. It had been a very long and busy day and he somehow got me to listen to every word he spoke.…

Since the moment I got here I felt at home. Even before I decided to attend Florida Southern, my admissions counselor was extremely patient and helpful. Now, as a student I work in Admissions as a Southern Ambassador. While giving tours, I have noticed what a small and great community Florida Southern is; current students wave at us on a tour showing how friendly our campus is, professors smile at us showing their excitement in seeing potential new students. Whether you are involved in greek life or you are a member of other organizations and clubs, you can always leave your mark on campus.…

I have been a part of the Future Business Leaders of America since middle school. One of the challenges that I had to overcome in becoming ready for college and career was "speaking up". I have always been a quiet person and I was never a fan of the spotlight. I would do almost anything to escape talking in public, but my teachers and advisers saw something in me that I would have never seen.…

I would consider myself moderately anxious about public speaking. I remember the first few communication apprehensions I experienced in my personal and work life. With my personal experience, I was at church when I shared a testimony with the bible study. With my work encounter, I had to conduct status updates for two areas during project implementations and testing phases with a large group. In both situations, my heart pounded loudly right before I spoke and when the words came out of my mouth, I felt like I had to speak quickly like Speedy Gonzalez!…

My primary thoughts towards Gordon College were created during a prospective student day. It turned out to be a negative experience that created a pessimistic view of this school and carried on my cynical view of Christians. It’s important because had I continued with my previous bias I would have attended a secular college which may have been a positive experience but would have definitely lead to a drastically different life.…

    1) Being a music performance student here at the University, it speaks directly to my academic and personal interests in participating in this purposed May Term Travel Course. As a classically trained flutist, and one who frequently engages with music from the Classical era, the whole experience would be an excellent opportunity for me to immerse myself in the culture and atmosphere that directly influenced the many compositions I come into contact with on a daily basis. As a scholar, it would grant me the ability to absorb not only factual/historical information regarding composers and events of that era, but also interact with the world and society shaped these people and their works. As a musician, it would better inform my performance practices and deepen my appreciation for the pieces I perform, ultimately allowing me to translate that into a greater and more rewarding experience for the audience and myself.…

When I was little, I wanted to be a chemist. I imagined myself in the lab coat and with goggles on, carefully pouring electric blue liquids and jade green foam back and forth into various containers, until something had exploded and I had discovered the best way to make flowers the size of people. As I grew up, I lost this fantasy, but I gained more knowledge on how I wanted to influence the world. Funnily enough, I discovered what I really wanted to do when I started working at Chick-fil-A during the summer before my sophomore year. All of my friends had warned me against working in fast food, quoting horrible smells and ridiculous customers and tons of grease.…

Apart from social role, personality is another important factor that affect a person's communication style. For example, if the person is extroverted, he/she would not be afraid to meet and talk with someone new. He/she would be friendly to people around them. This implies that an extrovert would feel comfortable to speak in both private and public speaking and he/she may tend to have “Rapport-talk” style of communication since they are keen to build relationships with others. Next, human beings’ conformity tendency within social group also affect a person’s communication style.…

I've taken on leadership roles before, especially in my position as a Scout troop leader but also in previous jobs and projects - I like to get work done, and to find ways to do it as efficiently as possible. As a Scout troop leader, I of course have experience in working with children and teens, but also in working with their parents and other adults.
