In order to gain the benefits of being culturally diverse and competitive in today’s world, a language should be taught in depth. Most students come into UC Davis with two or more years of another language at a high school level, then the development stops there. I have taken six years of Spanish in both middle and high school. I have sat in classes where we were expected to write essays and give full length presentations in Spanish, but yet I knew there was more to learn. There is more to learning a language than just learning dreadful verb conjugations and grammar, but it is about developing communication skills with other people. Even in English, it takes a long time for these communication skills to develop which why we are still currently take writing and public speaking courses. The University has deemed written and oral communication development in English important, but learning a foreign language is just as important. English is not the most common language spoken in this globalized world, but yet students are isolating themselves to solely knowing this one language. Students should be required to take a foreign language at the university level because only a couple of years of a foreign language will not be enough to survive in this globalized
