Ubudoda is a majority Xhosa play that explores the notion of what it is to be a man. It explores this core theme through Luyanda. Luyanda is coming back to South Africa after many years of studying in the United Kingdom. His reason for coming back home is to introduce his fiancé to his family. During his visit at home, hidden feeling between Luyanda and his elder brother are exposed. Even though the stage lay out was a thrust stage was used a fourth wall was still present. The audience noticed the presence of the fourth wall as the charades on stage never spoke directly to the audience. The audience was wade to watch an ‘illusion of reality’ (Trousdale Marion, 2007) through the imaginary fourth wall. The scenery was versatile therefore; the same space is used to portray different scenes taking place in different atmospheres. The production altered the space to portray and represent different environment. The space was first was first used to portray Luthando’s bedroom. The space changed into Luthando’s bedroom by adding simple props represented a place rather than trying to create an illusion of reality. The same space then later on used at the tradition ‘kitchen’ where the wives prepare the food. The space was easily interchangeable because of the props they used. The props allow the space to convert from one environment to the next efficiently with minimal time
