USS Indianapolis: A Short Story

Improved Essays
We all have those days that no matter how many days, months, or years pass we will never forget. For me, that day is July 30, 1945. I was only nineteen years old when I was aboard the USS Indianapolis we were on a top secret mission, none of us knew what we were hauling. Me and my men sat in a hazy room playing cards and drinking beer that Kurt stool from General Wake. We didn’t have to keep watch till morning. As I took the last drag on my cigar, there was a jerk and crash like sound, everything went still. John, my best friend looked into my eyes with great fear. Then there was a second jerk, but this time it sent us and our cards flying. There was only about ten of us. We all got on our feet and bolted out the door to see what was going …show more content…
I wasn’t sure if there was any sea left that wasn't consumed with our men’s blood . By then the sun was up and blistering our skin. But on the plus side there didn't seem to be anymore hungry sharks around for now. Men who were dying of dehydration started drinking the blood infested salt water. After a while they started hallucinating. Several men died of salt water poisoning. One man drew his gun on us, he thought we were Japs, he started shooting in the air saying he’ll shoot us. He attacked his best friend, punching him several times in the face. His friend at first took it like a true friend would. But after a while he had no choice, he pointed his gun at his head and pulled the trigger. I thought to myself what if that was John? Could I do what that man did?

“I want nothing more then to see my little girl again.” John said with a rusty voice. I replied “You will. They're out looking for us right now, they'll find us soon. We just have to hang on a little longer” John tried to laugh. “They're not looking for us! We miswell be the dead men who are floating along with us.”

I'm 79 now and to this day I still remember every minute floating in the sea in the blistering sun. John and I were 2 out of 317 men who survived. John got to see his wife and sweet little girl again. And for me the nurse who later took care of me became my wife and we have been happily married since and blessed with three

The Bertuli Story It is known that passing stories down from one family member to another keeps the memories alive. The same can be said for those who have served in our military.
