“If you want total security, go to prison. There you’re fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking is freedom” (Dwight D. Eisenhower). The U.S. prison system is bad and it is not working. There are more people in prison than there are people in some cities. The U.S. prison system is corrupt, and two of the most important aspects to understand about it are racism and mandatory minimums. prison system are the mandatory minimums. Mandatory minimums are bad. Because mandatory minimums are the lowest sentence someone can get. For example if someone were to get caught with illegal drugs the mandatory minimum would be a 15 to 30 year sentence. In “The School To Prison Pipeline”(ACLU), the author states that most students will go to prison or jail for 5 to 10 years after getting suspended multiple times. The reason this is important is because you are basically taking a child’s education away. Which will most likely make it so that he goes back to jail/prison. 5 to 10 years can make can make people change drastically especially when they are a kid or a teenager. It’s unfair to do that to someone at such a young age. In conclusion, the mandatory minimum is a bad system to use. Since someone could go to jail/prison for a long time for something really small. I just think it’s unfair how the system can treat
