Question 1.
The article provided by the US Census Bureau addresses the healthcare issues for any demographic minority. For example: American Indians and Alaskan Natives. Adequate and accessibility to healthcare services is provided for those who live on US reservations by the US Indian Health Service (IHS). According to the US Census, most American Indians and Alaskan Natives live outside reservations or in other isolated territories. “The 2010 Census reveals that 78 percent of the American Indian and Alaska Native live outside of tribal statistical areas.” (www.Census.Gov, 2007). IHS goal is to provide every American Indians who live outside the reservations adequate healthcare coverage. For example, immunization, flu prevention, and primary care physician expenses. IHS provides access and insurance for prevention treatment and medication in many regions outside the reservations, however, they do not provide adequate access or insurance for emergency treatment. Emergency treatment is expensive and isn’t covered by the IHS insurance for the American Indians. Many healthcare needs such as experimental treatments, cosmetic surgeries are excluded from the insurance provided. Needless to say that emergency services is important especially for the Alaska Natives who are socially and geographically isolated. American Indians have a high rate of tuberculosis, diabetics and glaucoma. Another problem is the high rate of infant mortality and suicide among adult population. HIS decided to address these problems by funding healthcare organizations that reside in those regions outside the reservations to the specific medical needs of American Indians.
