CPT Brown/Sir,

SPC Chelsea N. Brown has reach out to the USAREUR Office of Inspector General (OIG) to obtain clarification on the US Army Tattoo policy, according to AR 670-1, dated 25 May 2017.

I understand that SPC Brown currently has a ring tattoo and would like to get it cover up in the same area.

Tattoos are one of the most controversial things that we can do to our bodies. Even when the ink going onto somebodies’ skin does not affect us, we still have our opinion on it, and some of us are not afraid to speak up about it. Shenanigans Tattoo: A Refreshing Twist of a Tattoo Parlor Like others, I had a complete mock up of what I thought a tattoo parlor would be envisioned in my mind. Provocative art work would cover every inch of the walls, floors concealed with dirt, and unsanitary couches as well as chipped paint that looked like it had been there since the dawn of time. I was reluctant, to say the least, that I could be wrong about this stereotype as well as the stereotypes that follow the men and women that work in tattoo shops. Luckily for me, Shenanigans Tattoo was something out of the ordinary. It exhibited all the qualities of a tattoo parlor but took on a whole new light that made the shop shine.…

Many religious groups believe that tattoos are against their religion and destroy the temple that is a person’s body. Jones notes that “[b]efore he could be buried, a tattooed chief in the Marquesas had to have his skin removed postmortem to be allowed in to heaven” (Jones 3). This demonstrates that tattooing was acceptable for the living but tainted an individual’s acceptance into heaven. Jones mentions tattooing “was considered erotic, bu[t] paradoxically repelled the god who ruled Paradise” (Jones 3). Although tattooing was a staple in Polynesians, the God that they worshipped was repelled by their branding of flesh.…

Once upon a time, tattoo parlors were the domain of the docks, the back alleys of cities or down the block from a military base. Their proprietors were bikers, dockworkers and servicemen. But somewhere in the waning days of the 20th century, things changed and the tattoo became not only fashionable, but ubiquitous. You could say the tattoo managed to do something very few politicians ever hope to accomplish – transcend generational and culture lines.
