We have also implemented a growth strategy for UNLV and, as a key component of that, have asked deans to propose to us any growth to existing programs and/or launch of new programs—online and on campus—for which there is demand, that we can grow with quality, that we can manage in a way that maximizes the funding formula, that supports our top tier strategic plan, and for which students have clear outcomes such as placement. In order to incentivize this growth, we have proposed to deans that we will allow them to capture and use (to support these new students) as much as 70% of the net new tuition funding that these new students will contribute to UNLV. Thus far we have accepted and we are implementing four growth proposals, including a new Masters of Health Care Administration, a newly renovated undergraduate program in technology in business (along with a set of high demand computer applications courses), an expansion of the Physical Therapy program, and expansion of the Masters for teacher licensure program (with a specific focus on students/veterans that have a bachelors but were not licensed to teach). There are a half dozen or so additional proposals that are under consideration, including,

My mother, Annette MacRitchie, made the life changing decision to come to TWU from Ontario. In 1985, she had the privilege of being awarded the Terry Fox Scholarship, which she could choose to use at any Canadian University. She chose to attend Trinity because at that time it was the only Christian university in Canada. It turns out she never moved back to Ottawa, and the bonds made at Trinity have survived the test of time. To this day, she still tells me it was the best decision she made in her younger years.…

While researching Prairie State college, a two year, suburban community college that was founded in 1957; I came across some concerning information. According to the statistics provided by Collegescorecard.ed.gov, Prairie State College consistently ranks lower than the national median. For instance, only 40 percent of P.S.C’s students return after their first year of attending this is significantly lower than the national median by 69 percent. In addition to the institution having a graduation rate of 15 percent, the average salary after attending prairie state college is an alarming amount of 29,200 dollars. After reading this I began to question Prairie State’s productivity since the U.S. Census Bureau reported the national median in 2013…

The University of Southern California football program is in shambles; right now trying to pick up the pieces after having to fire coach Steve Sarkisian who has been battling alcohol abuse problems. It's something that had to be done because it's been reported he was drunk on the sidelines during games and at school gatherings so I don't blame them for this at all. However, I do question athletic director Pat Haden and how he's running the football program at this time because over the past few years since Pete Carroll left for the Seahawks it's been a revolving door for USC at the coaching position. It takes time to rebuild college programs and I don't think Haden has given the coaches in recent times a chance to implement…

THE ASIAN SOCIETY AND THE SONS OF THE CONFEDERACY CERTIORARI TO THE UNITED STATES CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS * Decided November 7, 2014* West Central Dixie State University was once known as a stronghold of the Old South and Jim Crow policies. The all-segregated university was known for resisting efforts by civil rights activists and federal courts to bring integration to the school in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. The racial intolerance that West Central Dixie State University once proudly stood for was soon dispersed with the help of legislation like the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the increased…

Midwestern public university and other universities across the country argue general education credits are beneficial to all as they give students a broad background and better students’ abilities to complete everyday activities. On the other hand, many students seem to feel that general education courses are a simply a waste of time. Comments from students include, “It’s just memorization. You can’t apply it to other parts of your life” and “It was a waste of time, useless, just busy work, a painful chore” (Russel & Yañez 334). These opinions expressed by students are clear and simple.…

Researching nontraditional students allowed me to capture the thoughts and feelings of these students in regards to involvement outside of the classroom. This research will give the campus an opportunity to reach out to this student population when planning events and take into consideration some of the challenges faced by non-traditional students. Student organizations on campus can also learn how to increase participation and membership in the organization from the non-traditional student. The overall goal is to give the nontraditional students a voice and allow administrators the opportunity to further support this student group.…

UNLV already has a remarkably low graduation rate and only 70% of freshman return for a second year at UNLV while Nevada’s education system has ranked the lowest in the country repeatedly, so it’s no surprise that UNLV is seen as a low-tier university when in actuality, the only factor that remains constant is Nevadan students (Whitaker). And instead of marketing towards students who reside in Nevada to get a higher education, UNLV should be searching for the students who are already motivated and will raise UNLV’s status on the West Coast. Although college is a rite of passage into adulthood and ultimately into the workforce, there are many other ways for students in Nevada to get to the same spot, such as community college or just going straight into the workforce by using the resources available on the Strip, Downtown, or in a casino. Another reason that UNLV should be more focused on admitting out-of-state students rather than in-state students is to increase funds, because the in-state students in Nevada have plenty of scholarships available to them, along with an already low tuition rate, and most are commuter students as well so by…

Introduction There are many initiatives that play a core role in helping colleges and universities maintain its academic stability, and social reputation. Some initiatives take on a bigger role than others; however, at any school displaying a high level of customer service to students is imperative. The individuals that college students interact with throughout their college career are faculty members. According to Tagg (2003) article “To the extent that their work is relevant to the education of undergraduates, “the faculty” can be defined at most colleges as the people who teach the classes” (p.23). Faculty acquires the responsibility of being the individual who provides knowledge to learner throughout their academic career.…
