UNL Symphonic Band Concert Report

The UNL Symphonic Band concert, I Raise My Song To You, was on Tuesday, October 13. The first piece was the Overture to “Candide”. It was in a major mode and in triple meter. The piece started off with a quick paced forte dynamic with monophonic texture. In the beginning, brass instruments would play a melody and the percussion and woodwind instruments would play a melody in response. There is a decrescendo about halfway through, and the piccolo comes in quietly playing the high-pitched melody. Soon the piece has a crescendo and the instruments go from playing a monophonic texture to polyphony. There is a sudden but final sounding cadence created by the percussion at the end. The major mode and conjunct melody, in addition to the switches in dynamics and texture, causes a scurrying lighthearted feeling for the piece. …show more content…
It was in a minor mode and was in triple meter. The piece is conjunct and starts out with a twinkling bell sound. The clarinets come in with monophonic texture and piano dynamic. It is calm, and alternates between monophonic texture and homophony with the flutes and piccolo playing a high-pitched melody over the percussion. This piece has a very tonal harmony so it flows along and has no tension. It has a slow decrescendo in the end that leaves the listener with a slight questioning feeling. The piece seems to tell the story of a person going on a long journey and reflecting on their life. I could really feel the emotion of the journey through the piece. It is peaceful all the way through due to the piano dynamic and the calm monophonic and homophonic

This piece begins with a tranquil woodwind choir with other instruments gradually joining in. The tempo is andante, as it is moderately slow, yet more of a simple pace. This work takes advantage of dynamics heavily, as it varies from pianissimo with a solo flute to a gorgeous and strong fortissimo dynamic of the whole ensemble. This piece also varies in texture quite a bit, as it alternates between monophonic soloist sections and grand homophonic sections of the whole band. Most of the melodic lines are smooth and legato, yet are disrupted by the pointed and staccato figures of the percussion section that underscore the longer lines of the wind instruments.…

Throughout the piece, the piano’s dynamics were played at a mezzo forte level. There was at times quick staccatos and accents, however I heard very little crescendos and diminuendos. If there was anything more I would have liked from the piece it would have been a broader range of dynamics that came from the pianist. Even when the baritone had nothing to sing, the constant monochromatic sound from the piano was unmoving.…

    1. The first piece of music I listened to for this assignment was Lohengrin, prelude to Act III composed by Wagner. The song was written for a scene for a wedding between a hero and heroine. The instruments in this song include a full orchestra and it is an orchestral piece. In my opinion, the song had a variety of feelings and sounds.…

The Mathis der Maler symphony (Mathias the Painter) was composed between 193334 while Hindemith worked on an opera of the same name. It’s a three movement work that received a very successful premier under Wilhelm Kurtwangler and the Berlin Philharmonic. The political implications of the work however caused much controversy within the ruling Nazi party; so much so that it led to Kurtwangler having to step down as music director of the orchestra and Hindemith to leave Germany before the outbreak of World War II. Hindemith wrote both the music and the libretto for his opera, which follows a fictional account of the life and artistic dilemma of Mathis Grunewald (born Mathis Gothart Niethart 14601528).…

The dynamics in this song alternated a couple times between pianissimo and fortissimo. The tempo of this song was a faster than the usually slow speed I usually this song played in. The melody was repeated with some variations. The solo by Brian Robertson in this piece had a sad sound because of all the minor keys he hit with a combination of playing softly. Overall, this piece was soothing and nice to listen to and got a big applause from the audience.…

The theme of this section was described by flute and clarinet. The rhythms in the classical period were to be pleasing to the ear, like all of which Mozart piece does. The final part had many similarities with the two previous chapters. However, this chapter was less bleak but happier and livelier. This chapter started with the swapping of the range of music and the tonal sense of the piece was very strong, hence the apparent comprehensibility, with the rhythms was very flexible, and unpredictable, making it overall more exciting for the spectators.…

This piece has “characteristics of classic sonata form, and is similar in energy and length to such concert overtures as Shostakovich’s Festival Overture.” As with a typical sonata form, the piece is broken down into five main sections. The first introductory section features the opening horn fanfare and a full ensemble crescendo into the exposition. Starting at measure four, the first theme is articulated with tutti figures thru many different instruments. Immediately following that in measure twelve, we hear the inversion of that melody in the clarinets and alto saxophone. The inversion is then repeated in the upper woodwinds and in the cornet.…

On April 10th, 2018, I attended a concert performed by three talented performers: John Carlo Pierce (Tenor), Michelle Stanley (Flute), Jeff LaQuatra (Guitar). The performances were at The Griffin Foundation Gallery in the Gregory Allicar Museum of Art. The performances were part of the Music in the Museum Concert Series, which is a performance based on the art that surrounds it. The art installment in the museum is called Pompeii Archive: Recent Photographs by William Wylie. Pompeii was once a thriving and sophisticated Roman city.…

This piece had a slow tempo, and it balanced all sections of the orchestra very well in regards to dynamics. The piece’s texture could best be categorized as polyphonic. This made the piece’s mood very reverent, but cheerfully so due to the melodies that were used. I liked this piece because it also balanced each section of the orchestra…

The instruments are all moving quickly and playing different and conflicting parts all over one another, which creates an interesting and energetic sound. I liked having this energetic and lively section towards the end of the piece. It created anticipation and excitement while listening, while also revisiting some of the initial musical sections from the first movement. I thought that the revisiting of initial musical pieces tied the whole thing together, by showing the connection through the first and last movements. I thought it was interesting that this movement ended with a downbeat, as it initially started with an…

On Thursday, September 29th at 7:30pm I attended the LU Symphony Orchestra Concert in Towns Auditorium. Prior to the concert beginning, I noticed a wide variety of instruments on the stage. There were some instruments that I did not know the name of but for the most part, I knew a large majority of the string, woodwind and brass instruments presented. The last time that I went to a symphony was when I was in elementary school, so attending an orchestral concert in college was a much different experience. I was fascinated by the diversity of instruments.…
