    1. What about your experience at Quinnipiac thus far prompted you to apply to be an Orientation Leader and why? What makes Quinnipiac different from the rest, is the community it sets forth for its faculty and students. Together we are one and can create a difference in each other’s lives. However, that sense of community could not be achieved through the simple action of blindly participating, but can be shaped through the guidance of our peers into who we are today.…

It would be the greatest honor to be a TRIO SSS transfer mentor for Wenatchee Valley College students. I am interested in being a transfer mentor because as a first-generation college student I understand that being a first-generation student of color comes with barriers, but also gives me a unique and valuable perspective with which to bring to higher education. My parents only have an elementary education and have no understanding of the U.S educational system and as the middle child of five siblings, I understand the responsibilities and pressures youth in these populations have with shouldering the burden to accessing and disseminating information to their entire family. Additionally, I understand the cultural challenges some students of color may face as many traditional households discourage pursuing…

I especially love recruiting and connecting with those who have zero knowledge about UHD because I look into the eyes of prospective freshman and I remember when I was in their shoes. In the past I thought that only the most outgoing, smart, and friendly were worthy of being ambassadors. Since coming to UHD I have realized that those are helpful qualities but the passion is what gives an ambassador…

During these moments of challenge and doubt whether frequent or seldom, undergraduates should know that there is a trusted academic support resource they could turn to at any time for motivation and answers. The proposed system of academic mentorship should be a group that is led by a member of faculty for every course, is mandatory for all enrolled students and convenes regularly for the purpose of course content clarity, career focus and formulating plans to help struggling students. In universities and colleges, one of the most formative mentorship relationships is between a faculty member and student; and the mentorship relationship is commonly regarded as a central aspect of students’ research experiences (Brown, Daly, & Leong, 2009). Mentorship should not only be limited to research papers, but should be an intrinsic offering of the college to students for the duration of their program. Though this will be undertaken in a group setting since the traditional one-to-one mentor-mentee relationship is impractical, none of its positive effects will…

A mentor, someone who teaches or gives help and advice to a less experienced and often younger person, would allow me to utilize past life experiences and the formal education I have received while obtaining my degree. Becoming a mentor to troubled youth would likely be a volunteer position that would coincide with my career as a youth services aide. My hope is to tell my story and lead with the knowledge of the mistakes I’ve made to make an impact on the youth of today. If I am able to reach out and help at least one person while in either of these positions I will have completed the greatest gift to society, and made all of my college study worthwhile. All of the struggles I have been endured and been faced with will finally be without…

The question is “why do I feel that I am ready for the Senior Loan Advisor position?” According to Merriam-Webster the word ready is defined as being in a suitable state for an activity, action, or situation; fully prepared mentally or physically for some experience or action. Data were gathered four times aross students' first year and archivally at entry and again 4 years later. Results showed that students being peer-mentored was related to satisfaction with their university during the semester of the mentoring intervention as well as the end of the following semester, but more mixed results were found in terms of commitment and actual graduation behavior when compared to the nonmentored control group of freshman who received only the general orientation course. Thus, the mentoring intervention seems to work will for influencing satisfaction but not for actual academic performance indicators such as overall college GPA or…

I originally thought that by just being there for someone you were a mentor. I now know through this program that mentoring involves giving both tools and advice to effectively help your mentee. The relationship with a mentee is somewhat different than a relationship between friends. There is a sort of bond that occurs from helping the student but the student holds you to higher standards than a friend would. I am excited about mentoring next semester because I want to hone my mentoring skills even further be able to help my mentees in a more effective way.…
