Chancellor’s mentorship challenge
The American Council on Education recognized UH Chancellor Renu Khator for her outstanding mentorship of future higher education leaders. The Chancellor has mentored five ACE Fellows, who are each preparing for senior-level positions in higher education administration.

“Mentoring is powerful. It is the only thing that can explain my own journey,” Khator said on her blog, “the journey of a girl from the rural heartland of India to becoming the chancellor of a major research university.”

In her blog post, Chancellor Khator challenged everyone to pledge to reach out to ten people and mentor them by helping them realize their dreams, grow and become leaders. Who can you mentor and help grow?

Public art is all around us, and when you take a moment to look around you’ll find some amazing pieces. While walking around downtown there is always one mural that catches my eye every time. Located on the back side of the Burton Cummings Theatre (formerly known as the Walker Theatre, 364 Smith Street.) is an untitled piece by Winston Leathers (1932-2004). Maybe it’s the vibrant colours, or the fact that I spent just over 14 hours waiting outside the theatre two years ago waiting to see my favourite band perform. Either way, I can’t help but do a double take when I happen to walk by.…

This year, our Marching Band got the chance to go to Nashville, Tennessee where we encountered the different musical culture they had. We attended The Grand Ole Opry, a concert where many talented country musicians performed live in a giant hall. It was a fascinating experience when we learned about the musician’s lives through their music and what they consider everyday aspect of their lives that we don’t have farther up north. One of the band members got the opportunity to participate in a dance off onstage during one of the breaks, something the whole band celebrated in camaraderie. A museum with all things country music, “Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum” held all kinds of pieces from various dresses and instruments of musicians from…

“A leader has to watch every word he or she says and quickly learns that you can’t go through life without a few critics, some well deserved” (pg. 5), this quote as some of the beginning words from MacDonald truly shows that a leader has responsibilities to uphold to. I found it interesting that he showed these responsibilities are not only external, but internal as well. Many do not realize the internal battles that leaders in ministry go through, and in order for leaders to handle a situation in a mature manner; they must uphold to the responsibilities of character they are expected to maintain. There are many internal and external expectations of leaders that are specified in Building Below the Waterline, but only some really stood out to me as factors that I would practice more than others in my leadership positions.…
