During this period, more people began advocating for equal rights. The American Revolution greatly impacted the role of women in society. In some cases, women were allowed to assist soldiers and play roles in the war. This can be seen in the “Woodcut of a Patriot Woman” (Doc. A), where a lady is stood holding a rifle near a fort. This image shows that women began to bear the right to perform tasks previously only done by men. For example, Molly Pitcher, a heroine during the revolution, took over her husband’s gun when he could no longer fight. Also, the concept of Republican Motherhood helped elevate the role of women in society. It granted them with the role as the keepers of the nation’s conscience. While women still had little rights, this set the foundation for their equality movement in the future. The American Revolution also greatly impacted the Tories, or the U.S. citizens who were loyal to the British king. As colonial tensions rose and the majority of colonists wished for independence from Britain, the Tories were viewed as traitors. The Patriots encouraged other colonists to “instantly banish every Tory from among you,” (Doc. B). economy. The economy was very much reliant on agriculture to make a profit. Many people made a living as a farmer after the U.S. became an independent nation. In Document F, a man plowing a field can be seen with a symbolic woman standing behind him. The purpose of this woman is to show that liberty can be obtained through hard work, such as farming. It shows that agriculture was an important industry and that growing crops was necessary. Though agriculture was an important business, there was controversy about whether it was more imperative than manufacturing. This led to a disagreement between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. Hamilton believed that the U.S. should be based on industry and manufacturing. He also laid out the economy’s basis by creating a national bank, paying off state debts, and placing a tax on whiskey. On the other hand, Jefferson valued agrarian society, whose economy is based on producing crops and farmland. He didn’t want a commercial economy, but rather one dependent on the success of farmers. Both Hamilton and Jefferson influenced American society, which can be seen in our agriculture and financial
