U-Rah Rar Personal Statement

“U-Rah-Rah!” my favorite teacher would chant to my class. Decked out in Badgers gear, my seventh grade math teacher proudly showed off her alma mater every chance she got. Her charisma was contagious, and the investment she put in all of us was clear. This teacher did more for me than just teach equations and theories— she taught me how to be confident in my own abilities. I had not enjoyed math before her class, but the way she taught finally intrigued me. My love and understanding of math grew, and I became my teacher’s biggest fan. She encouraged me to join the math team, and would assure me even when I did not believe I would do well. We became very close, and I wanted to be just like her. Even though I knew nothing about college, I told everyone that I wanted to go to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Through the rest of school, my love for math only grew. Each epiphany was cause for a celebration, and the foundation for a new discovery. When I began to research colleges and majors as a junior, I came across the actuarial science major. I loved how it combined math with statistics and economics, and then applied it to real world situations. The …show more content…
I believe it is important for an actuary to have knowledge of business and management in order to communicate efficiently and effectively. In addition, UW-Madison prepares its students extremely well for the difficult actuarial exams. The percentage of graduates who have passed two or more exams truly speaks to the strength of the program. I would take full advantage of the opportunities offered to students through the renowned faculty, as well as the Risk and Insurance career fair. The actuarial science program gives students all of the materials and opportunities for success. This is clearly seen in the ninety percent of students who have found full time jobs within six months of

Coming into UNC as a first-year student, I was lucky enough to have quite a few transfer credits from high school; many of which were in my intended field of study: mathematics. Looking to continue with a major in mathematics, I signed up for the next course in the intended major progression, MATH 381: Discrete Mathematics. This course serves as an introduction to mathematical logic, almost like a stepping stone towards higher mathematics. On my first day of my first year at Carolina, I walked into the classroom in Phillips to realize that I was the only first year in the course. The rest of them were sophomores or juniors, who were all quite familiar with the inner machinations of Carolina’s mathematics department.…
