U-High Creek Water Quality Analysis

The water quality of the U-High Creek has been tested to be excellent. However, that does not mean that every creek is pure or excellent. Some people, more specifically farmers, use fertilizers made from Nitrogen and Phosphorus to kill pests or bugs. Little do they know, the pesticide or fertilizers get into streams and creeks and contaminate it leaving algae growing more rapidly or consistently. Consequently, if the algae overfills the creek, organisms will then die out from oxygen shortage (Lenntech 2016). Another Impact of water pollution comes from point pollution. Point pollution is where there is just one point of origin where the problem comes from. In the past, factories would dump their waste in creeks, ponds, streams, or lakes and severely pollute them. Though we have made this illegal, the damage is already done making organisms in certain areas die out not being able to tolerate so much pollution (CreekFreaks 2016). A riparian zone is the land in between a creek, river, or stream and terrestrial land. Riparian zones work in many different ways. For example, it helps delay floodwater because the trees and vegetation absorb pollution and water making it harder for a flood to continue. Riparian zones are also good for the environment in terms of providing organisms habitats. Another pro of riparian zones is the fact that it decreases land erosion and runoff during or after a storm. There are not many cons, however, people will find them unappealing and space consuming meaning that there won’t be as much space for man-made structures or buildings.
