U-High Creek Environmental Analysis

The quality of the water in the creek was excellent. Even though the water quality in the U-High creek was excellent doesn’t mean that all creeks have great water quality. One way that water can be polluted is through fertilizers and pesticides. This happens because farmers use many fertilizers and pesticides to help their crops grow. Then when it rains, those chemicals can be washed through the soil and into rivers and creeks. If this happens and large amounts of chemicals are washed in the river, then the nitrate and phosphate levels will increase and leads to excess algae growth. The algae will then use all of the dissolved oxygen and lead to the death of many organisms (Lenntech, 1998-2016). Another way that water can be polluted is by chemical waste products such copper, cadmium, mercury, zinc, lead, and cyanide. Most of the time chemical waste is accidentally discharged into the water. High concentrations of chemical waste can lead to immediate death or bioaccumulation can occur which will also lead to death of many organisms (Lenntech, 1998-2016). …show more content…
The Now Mow Zone is the stripe of land with natural vegetation that is located along the bank and separates the river from developed areas. This area is important because it keeps the banks intact and good land from washing away. This is a very effective way to keep pollution out of the water (Life at the Water’s Edge,2016). Some advantages of the No Mow Zone are that it reduces chemical runoff and erosion. Also it provides habitat and shade for organisms (Life at the Water’s Edge).
