Tyranny In The Outsiders

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is a novel that depicts how fourteen year old Ponyboy Curtis endures life without his parents. Ponyboy and his two older brothers Sodapop and Darry, Darry being the oldest, are left to fend for themselves after the death of both their parents in a fatal car accident. Darry works as much as he can and Sodapop is a high school dropout who occasionally works at a gas station. Ponyboy does his best in school and has always found comfort in the greasers as a second family. After being involved in a self defense related murder, he is threatened with the possibility with being sent to a boys home. Ponyboy should stay with his brothers because that is all he has left of his original family, he is financially supported at home, and the greasers take the place of his parents.

In other words, “Darry didn’t deserve to work like an old man, when he was only twenty . . . he didn’t have time between jobs”(16). This shows that Darry works hard to buy Ponyboy and Sodapop the necessities they need to survive. Furthermore, this also illustrates that he has the tools to become a responsible guardian that can raise them both to be good people. To emphasize “With your brains and grades you could get a scholarship, and we could put you through college”(173). This shows that Darry cares about his future and will do whatever it takes to help him succeed. Moreover, this shows that in the long run it is in Ponyboy’s best interest to stay with Darry because he cares about his future.
