Hi, Stephanie. I can’t tell you how much I loved, and agreed with, how you described and assessed Lamott’s writing style! I found each essay in Traveling Mercies fused wisdom with humor. Her writings have made it unequivocal how surviving life’s little obstacles is possible for anyone. Lamott loses her dad and closest acquaintance to cancer, contracts bulimia, becomes an alcoholic, and gives birth with no one around to help her care for the child.…

I agree quite strongly with Hemingway that age brings increasing difficulty in finding heroes, but that one still needs them. As skepticism increases, the number of people one can admire or hope to emulate decreases. An older person, having more experience and having acquired, one hopes, a more objective and realistic assessment of other people, tends to see more flaws than a younger person might. On the other hand, the older person is likely to recognize and value certain qualities such as careful reasoning, empathy, and kindness that a younger person might overlook or consider irrelevant. (Yet another problem is that a person's heroes tend to be older than herself, and the number of possibilities dwindles, but that has to be accepted!)…

To say that Dr. Laura Schlessinger has been a controversial character over the past few decades is quite a significant understatement. Those who love to hate the talk show host use words like “rude,” and “dictatorial,” and reference a rise in blood pressure when forced to even hear her voice, while her staunch supporters readily rally behind her self-proclaimed “preaching, teaching, and nagging.” Regardless of where a person falls on that spectrum, she definitely gives the world something to talk about.…

The Derogatory Portrayal and its Effects of Women on Reality Television Many individuals are starting to suggest that the massive production of reality shows emanating negative connotations that reflect overly exaggerated images of womanhood could possibly be responsible for significantly contributing to the influx of emotional disturbances and/or behavior disorders. What society has openly embraced as friendly entertainment, has grossly underestimated and/or has a lack of knowledge in understanding the power of subliminal messages that are transmitted to the subconscious mind and as individuals mindlessly engage the viewings of destructive behaviors portrayed by woman; in addition, to the consequences of the psychological effects a large or consistent consumption of such negative influences can have on the mind; thereby, unknowingly establishing destructive patterns of…

The Real, the Bad, and the Ugly by Cassie Heidecker is an interesting example of analyzing the reality TV epidemic and in addition to the people that view it. The author starts out by listing things that go into a reality TV production and things that happen in real life in order to state that these are two different things despite the idea that reality TV is supposed to be “real”. The mundanity of real life is emphasised here vs. the idea that reality TV is scripted and has a lot of extra work put into it to make reality TV more appealing to a broader audience. The author goes on to say that real life is boring which I thought was funny and a little ironic considering that later the author mentions that she is somebody who sets aside time…
