Tyr is considered a lesser known deity in comparison to the other Norse gods, however, no less in significance in European culture. The Younger Edda states that warriors call on his name “to [sway] victory in war” (Snorre). There are other examples in the real world of reverence and recognition of the god Tyr. Towns in what we call Scandanavia were thought to be inspired by their devotion to this deity based on their names, such as Tyslundr or “Tyr’s Grove” and Tysnesoen or the “island of Tyr’s headland” (Turville-Petre). There are also correlations between the Germanic god Mars and Norse god Tyr. Tuesday can be translated to have Tyr’s name when translating Norse and can be translated “Dies Martis” or Day of Mars in Latin (Lindow). Similarily, both Mars and Tyr are gods of War. According to Turville-Petre, a stone monument is dedicated to “Mars Thingsus” which can be close in translation to Tyr was found near Hadrian’s wall, where human sacrifices with blood rituals were considered “acceptable” to the war god (Turville-Petre). Smite is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) created by Hi-Rez Studios. This game allows players to control gods of different cultures in an all-out battle royale. In the game, Tyr is classified as a Physical Melee warrior (Smite Wiki). The backstory of this version of Tyr is very accurate to the lore and stories associated with him. Smite gives him the title “The Lawgiver” to solidify this ancient legacy (Smite Wiki). He is also one of a few characters that have two “states” of activity: Assault and Guard. The Assault stance is for offence and attacking other players with significant amounts of damage while Guard is for defense and healing to prevent death (Smite Wiki).
