Living in the United States as a woman is difficult. Living in the United States as a poor woman of color, on the other hand, is a completely different burdensome situation. Not only are women of color subject to the trifecta of sexism, racism, and classism, but they are also exploited by the government for their labor. In their essay, “Organizing Home Care,” Jennifer Klein and Eileen Boris argue that home care is the government’s method of saving money by taking advantage of poor women of color. As opposed to nursing homes, which are viewed as costly forms of institutionalization, home health care is the preferred option by both clients and the client’s loved ones, who are unable to care for them themselves.…

During this investigation, the Alive and Weill Check with Ms. Emma Hernandez took place during an announced visit with her at the La Posada retirement community center at 501 S. La Posada Circle, Green Valley, AZ 85614. The retirement community center is a private well-guarded facility with roaming Security Guards throughout the center which prohibits photos to be taken within the facility, as all visits must be through contacting the front lobby office and checking in before any contact is to be made with any of the tenants. Ms. Hernandez’s meeting was held in her apartment # 123, which was found to be a one bedroom apartment which had a small front living room and a small kitchen with a refrigerator and stove. The interior of the home seemed to be cluttered with various pictures and mementos. However, the apartment was clean and smelled fresh without no present of pet odors.…

CCRC’s are running out of room and/or land within their communities; therefore, they need to add more independent living quarters. CCRC’s are currently looking for new alternative ways to grow and be cost effective, coming to the conclusion of establishing satellite communities and partnerships (Study, 2014). The satellite communities are being made as an extension of CCRC’s. The continuum of care will occur at one location, and individuals will be relocated to a nearby satellite community, which offers a more vigorous downtown lifestyle. A lot of younger older adults are still active within the community and do not want to attend any environment that feels like a retirement community, therefore the creation of satellite communities will bring a great new twist to this form of HCBS.…

Another main focus of evidence-based OT intervention is caregiver training and education that aims to equip them so that they have an increased perceived competence and ability to handle and understand the behavior problems and functional decline of the person with NDD that they care for. More specifically, OTs can positively impact the lives of both the patient and the caregiver by taking time to work with the caregiver and train them in the NDD disease process, effective supervision, positive communication strategies, available resources, personal stress management, problem solving, coping strategies, and simplifications of instructions and commands (Edwards, 2015; Gitlin, Winter, et al., 2010; Schulz et al., 2002). Introduction The Older Americans Act was enacted over 50 years ago in 1965 order to provide millions of elderly U.S. citizens much-needed home and community services (Blancato, 2014). Even though it has been changed and updated over fourteen times, its primary goal is to continue to help older adults remain as independent as possible by staying either in their community or in their homes (Blancato, 2014). In order for elderly people to live in their homes and communities longer, they often need help from family caregivers. There are also residential alternatives which offer supportive services and care in an environment that is homey so that the elderly can avoid spending their last days in a cold and impersonal institutional setting.…

As I made my way into Vista Adult Day Care in Maywood California, it was a narrow space for the large amount of people that were inside. As I waited for the interview with the director of this program, Eugenio Venegas, I observed how joyous people looked. At nine in the morning, the seniors in the center were very active doing their weekly swap meet gathering. On this day, the people in this program are allowed to bring anything they wish to sell among themselves, it ranged from clothes, blankets and objects. Those who wouldn’t bring anything to sell could either shop if they wish to do so, or engage in other activities such as eating, playing card games and meet up with the nurse to take their blood pressure.…

First week of my fieldwork experience took place at Magik adult daycare. Adult day care centers, are facilities where frail seniors and disabled adults can go during the day from Monday to Friday if they cannot, or do not wish to be home alone. This type of services is regulated as discretion of each state, although the National Adult Day Services Association (NADSA) offers some overall guidelines in its Standards and Guidelines for Adult Day Care ( Robinson, n.d.). The centers are one way for the elderly or disabled to avoid or delay entering a nursing home and to give family members who care for them a chance to continue working at their jobs or have some respite during the day ( Robinson, n.d.).…
