Type D personality, stress, and symptoms of burnout: The influence of avoidance coping and social support

Introduction The objective of this article was to explore certain coping techniques termed as approach coping, avoidance coping, or observations of available social support for their role, if any, in the relationship between the Type D personality and perceived stress. Coping mechanisms or strategies we can use when we encounter stress include approach-oriented coping, avoidance-oriented coping and social diversion are three coping strategies used as tools to contend with stress. The approach-oriented strategy involves either changing our stressful situation or managing our emotions. Avoidance-oriented strategy is the action where we ignore the problems and challenges we are dealing with. Described as chronic state of stress, resulting in physical and emotional exhaustion. Even though evidence is very limited when considering the connection between Type D personalities and the relationship between perceived stress with the symptoms of burnout. Type D individuals are known to experience longer levels of stress at advanced levels, making them a prime candidate for burnout.
Discussion, Conclusions, and Recommendations: Throughout my study of this research, I found the topic of burnout to be most interesting. Two things I wish the article had addressed, a hypothesis test been based on the work force and more information about every day applications to effectively manage stress. The text book touched a little on the topic of burnout, but this article brought to light some very useful information. The discussion of burnout is a common topic in my profession, evident by the high turnover, chronic health issues and anxiety. In my career, ways that I have coped with the stress is to just march right through
