However, complications can occur if not treated properly. Results of this can be short or long term complications since the blood vessels become thickened which can damage vital organs, including the heart, eyes, kidneys, and brain. Long term damage can result in kidney failure, blindness, and atherosclerosis. Also, because of poor circulation ulcers may form particularly in the feet. Therefore the body's decreased ability to heal may require amputation of the affected foot.
