In addition to a Biology degree, I am interested in obtaining a minor in Business. I plan on establishing my own private practice in the future, and I believe having a background in business is imperative. As a school that strongly believes in an interdisciplinary education, …show more content…
One research that I have carried out is focused on the topic of Type II diabetes, also known as Insulin Resistance. Type II Diabetes is a global health crisis and an epidemic that has spread throughout the world. While some genetic factors can increase the risk of developing Type II diabetes, this disease is usually fueled by poor eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle. Type 2 diabetes impairs the body cells’ ability to respond to insulin and utilize glucose in the blood. A cell becoming insulin resistance and failure to carryout glucose metabolism is believed to be a consequence of surplus of insulin being present, also known as hyperinsulinemia. However, the specific malfunctions in the insulin signaling pathway caused my hyperinsulinemia and ultimately leading to insulin resistance, still remain ambiguous. My research was focused on unraveling some of these ambiguities at a molecular level by examining the Glucose Transporter 4 gene, an insulin response gene, for potential downregulations caused by hyperinsulinemia. I have studied this gene in epithelial mouse liver cells and the results were very insightful. The cells that served as the model for Type II diabetes and treated with chronically high levels of insulin (150nM) showed significantly higher levels of Glut4 gene expression by a fold …show more content…
The results of this experiment indicate there’s room for more research to be conducted in this area and there are more questions that I would like to answer. In addition to research in Diabetes, I want to participate in research focused on cancer and development of effective cancer treatments that target only cancerous cells, rather than all somatic cells. The University of Pennsylvania is one of the worlds’ top research institutions, with a research budget of $851 million. The immense and wonderful research opportunities found at UPenn will allow me to explore my research interests as well as discover new ones.
What I find most attractive about the University of Pennsylvania, is the amount of resources and great opportunities it provides for its students in order to pursue their career interests and passions. I am interested in becoming part of an intellectually nourishing environment, where my curiosity is encouraged and my creativity is praised. I want to be part of a diverse community where I am exposed to different perspectives and ideas. I believe the University of Pennsylvania fits this description of my ideal
