However, metformin should be avoided in the patients with risk of lactic acidosis such as people with stroke, pneumonia, myocardial infarction, heart failure, and renal insufficiency and should be stopped before any surgery or if an old person has to undergo an exploration requiring iodinated contrast, because of the risk for renal insufficiency whose risk is greater in the elderly population (Chentli, Azzoug, & Mahgoun, 2015). Other drugs such as pioglitazone can also be used in managing type 2 diabetes in the elderly, but a side effect of fluid retention needs to be monitored especially in those with congestive heart
