Diabetes is an epidemic condition that affects millions of people of all ages, genders, races, and ethnic groups around the globe. Diabetes management implies a team of care health professionals that approach this condition by teaching patients’ knowledge, skills, and providing support to the patients and family. As a professional nurse and future advanced practice nurse, providing care for patients with type 2 diabetes it is challenging. The healthcare provider’s role is to reinforce healthy behaviors and modify the unhealthy ones in order to prevent complications. In the role of delivering care to patients with this chronic disease educational program is influential in the patient’s gaining knowledge about disease, compliance with the treatment, glycemic control in reducing the risk for complications. The results of education are a lifestyle modification, diabetes control and reduce healthcare costs (Conlon, 2010).
Diabetes education is an important vehicle for acquiring knowledge about the diabetes mellitus as a chronic disease, helping develop skills to manage it, and adhering to a self-management program. There are evidences in the literature of increasing diabetes knowledge through education are directly correlated with A1C (Dyson et al., 2010).The author of this paper was interested to determine if the diabetes education would decrease A1C over a 3 months period.
