Diabetes affects many people, not only in America but globally. Diabetic patients are categorized as Type 1, Type 2, or Gestational when they are diagnosed. Diabetes is a very serious diagnosis that must be controlled in order to avoid further life threatening complications, such as vision problems or alterations in organ functioning. Diabetes is affecting global developing countries no matter what culture or income level. According to the World Health Organization, diabetes is a metabolic disorder that is characterized by an elevation of blood sugar levels. Although globally they are trying to identify risk factors earlier for diabetes, it is a challenge when low socioeconomics come into the situation (Mash et al., 2012). Diabetes in The United States takes a disproportionate toll of the minorities and the poor (Chaufan, 2012). Future needs that could enhance and provide better education and patient centered care for diabetic patients could include earlier education on lifestyle management, such as healthy foods and physical activities that kids could participate in more regularly. Education is such an essential factor for preventing and managing diabetes. The greatest barrier to healthy eating is the high price of food (Chaufan, 2012). This knowledge helps us understand exactly how why being an advocate for the patient is so important. Future services that could enhance and decrease the prevalence and complications of diabetes would be to encourage more frequent physician visits if the patient’s have possible risk factors. Also, if transportation or economic status is an issue, refer patients to social services to see what opportunities there may be to help with economic
