Type 2 Diabetes: A Qualitative Study

For this assignment I decided to use the study from Chia-Pei, Yun-Shing, Hsu-Huei, Hsiao-Yun, & Mei-Yen (2013) titled “Health-promoting behavior is positively associated with diabetic control among type 2 diabetes patients” from the Open Journal of Nursing. I was able to find this study using the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature nursing database using the key words Type 2 Diabetes and health promoting behaviors. This study was a cross-sectional survey and used a descriptive design. The theoretical framework for this particular study was to relate the cause and effect of health promotion behaviors as it relates to Type 2 Diabetes. This framework was used to answer the question does promoting health behaviors have a positive effect on glycemic control or promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors.

The DMHP Scale is consisted of 7 items related to exercise behavior, 7 items on risk reducing behaviors, 4 items on enjoying life behaviors, 4 items on stress management behaviors, 3 items on health responsibility, and 5 concerning healthy eating related behaviors. These items were measured on a 5-point scale from (never, some-times, half, usually, and always). According to the study the validity of this tool was examined by vital review of the literature, professional reviews, and pilot trials. This assessment tool was evaluated eleven experts in the professional critiques and a context validity index of 0.97 was achieved. The internal consistency revealed that cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.90, alpha coefficient for the subscales from 0.63 to 0.88, and total variance was determined at 58.4 %. The concept of Diabetic control is measured by biochemical indicators such as blood pressure measurements, laboratory testing of glycated hemoglobin level and fasting blood
