According to the ATI PowerPoint, “The pancreas and the liver are the main function supporters of insulin. The endocrine portion of the pancreas has about 1 million small glands and the islets of Langerhans, scattered through the organ” (ATI PowerPoint). There are two types of cells that are important to glucose controls, alpha and beta cells. The alpha cells produce glucagon, a hormone that causes the release of glucose from the cell storage sites whenever blood sugar levels are low. The Beta cells produce insulin that allows the body cells to use and store carbohydrates, fats, and protein. The membranes of many cells are against glucose; insulin is like the key that opens the membrane to glucose. This leads to the liver, which is the number …show more content…
There are two main types of diabetes, Type 1 Non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) and Type 2 insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Type 1 diabetes mellitus is “an autoimmune dysfunction involving the destruction of beta cells, which produce insulin in the islets of Langerhans of the pancreas. It is also characterized as a metabolic disorder by hyperglycemia resulting in the lack of insulin effect. In a person who is suspected of having Type 1 it is triggered usually by a viral infection then the production of antibodies which then kill the beta cells that leads to the decline or lack of insulin secretion”. According to American heart association, “Heart diseases and stroke are the No. 1 causes of death and disability among people with type 2 diabetes. In fact, at least 65 percent of people with diabetes die from some form of heart disease or stroke” (American heart association). Heart disease is most prevalent in diabetes due to the lack of exercise, hypertension, smoking and dyslipidemia. In addition to heart disease a patient can have peripheral vascular disease, which causes lack of circulation to the brain and heart. The most common sign of this disease is intermittent claudication. Neuropathy can be a cause of this due to the lack of the circulation in the feet, which cause foot injury; this is the main complication leading to hospitalization. According to ATI PowerPoint, “sensory neuropathy, ischemia and infection are the leading cause of food disease among clients with diabetes” (ATI PowerPoint slide 113). Patients get lose of pain, pressure and temperature sensation that leads to injury. Patients have lack of blood flow to their feet which make the healing process decrease. Also a patient can have retinopathy due to the glucose levels and nephropathy that is the leading cause of end stage kidney disease.
