Diabetes Diabetes is defined as a disease in which the body’s ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin is impaired, resulting in abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates and elevated levels of glucose in the blood and urine. A simpler way of stating that is when a person’s blood glucose, or blood sugar levels are too high for the body. The pancreas is an organ in the body that produces insulin, with diabetes, the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to lower the blood sugar in a person’s body. It is a very common disease that many people have dealt with over the course of their lives. It is a very serious disease, but also one that is very able to be lived with. The first known mention of Diabetes was in 1552 BC, when an Egyptian physician started documenting frequent urination (McCoy, 2009). Type 1 diabetes is caused by the immune system destroying the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. Type 1 is also known as juvenile diabetes since it is most commonly found in children or young adults. Type 1 is probably the more dangerous out of the two, although both are pretty serious and no joking matter. Type 2 diabetes is the more popular of the two, affecting nearly 80 percent more people than type 1. The difference between the two is that type 1, there isn’t enough insulin made. On the other hand, in type 2 there is insulin made but the body seems to “resist” the insulin in some way. Diabetes is usually genetic and there isn’t one certain way to become diabetic. To this day there isn’t really a cure, but eating healthy and staying in shape are good ways to stay on top of things. Staying balanced is one of the best things to do, to manage ones blood glucose, you need to balance what you eat and drink with physical activity and diabetes
