Type 1 diabetes is when your immune system destroys the cells in your pancreas, which are called beta cells. The beta cells are the cells that makes insulin for your body. Your body needs to produce insulin because it helps move sugar, glucose in your body’s tissue. In type 1 diabetes because the beta cells are damaged there is no glucose moving into your tissue. Because of this, it causes high blood sugar (Dansinger, 2016). Having high blood sugar can lead to many complications in a person’s life. High blood sugar can lead to kidney failure and having to get a new kidney. Type 1 diabetes usually happens in children and young adults. Type 1 diabetes is usually known as juvenile diabetes. Only about 5% of the population has type 1 diabetes.
