On Nov. 30, as a part of Diabetes Awareness Month, Dillard University’s Office of Community and Church relations and the First District Ministry Baptist Association sponsored an event to help people become more informed about diabetes and how to manage it. A staggering 30 million people in the United States have Diabetes. I chose this non-communicable disease because it has affected my own family. Three of my grandparents have the disease. My mother is concerned that she will become diabetic because it is hereditary. This could in turn be passed along to me if we as a family do not start making some changes to our nutrition and exercise.…

To make a long story short, my whole lifestyle had to change in order to survive: a new diet plan, constantly needing to prick my finger to check my blood sugar, taking time out of my day to exercise and adjusting my insulin intake. Having obtained this chronic illness came with restrictions and responsibilities. It was like a ball and chain shackled to my ankle. “Okra can cure diabetes,” “Your leg can get amputated,” “You’re not even fat though,” and “Doesn’t it hurt to prick your finger all the time?” is all I ever hear.…
Last year, my twenty-four year old brother was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes. Surprising everyone, it seemed unlikely he would become diagnosed, especially as a young adult. Type One diabetes can affect children and adults at any age, and is affected by both environmental and genetic factors. This type of diabetes has nothing to do with diets or lifestyle choices, and cannot be prevented. This disease’s onset is quite immediate, and forces the person to rely on insulin pumps or injections to function properly. If balance of insulin is not perfect, the patient could die or have other serious health…
