Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) is also known as early onset or juvenile diabetes due to the fact it is usually diagnosed before adulthood. It is also called insulin dependant diabetes. This is due to the fact that insulin is not produced properly or at all within the body due to cellular autoimmunity. This means the immune system is attacking its own cells within the body. In the case of T1DM the cells that are attacked are the cells, which produce insulin. These cells are called β – cells.
