The qualitative study outlines a growing issue with Type 1 Diabetes in the world today, with 215,000 children suffering from the condition in the U.S. These children require daily administration of insulin, which means they are dependent upon nursing care frequently. The problem statement surrounds the question of whether nurses and medical care providers are properly trained on diabetes management. The authors imply that their perspectives might have an impact on the quality of care in which diabetes patients receive. Other research provided proof that preparation and perspectives of health care providers have a large impact on the care of patients dealing with various conditions: “In a rehabilitation rotation, medical students were randomly assigned a disability such as paralysis, blindness, or deafness, and asked to perform medical activities designed to demonstrate practical issues faced by patients with these disabilities. The students gained new insight into what it was like to have the disability, improving rapport and communication with patients” (Par. 18). The specific study involved 21 students—2 males and 19 females who were enrolled in a Family Nurse Practitioner graduate program (Pg. 54). The authors explain that the students were required to maintain a daily journal while utilizing the insulin pump.
