This past Friday, I had the opportunity to see Dr. Rachel Whitcomb's performance in PNC Recital Hall, titled "Back on my Feet Again. " This was a country, blues, and bluegrass concert coming from a vocalist and professor with a classical learning background. It centered around a theme that although a knowledge of classical techniques is important for any singer, they should still try to incorporate their own unique musical techniques into their teaching or performance repertoire. The beginning of the concert featured a digital presentation that questioned what "appropriate" music should be considered and who has the authority to decide what should be performed by formal singers. The questions were all rhetorical and would later be answered by Dr. Whitcomb throughout her performance.…

They all were actively engaged in the music, however Wincenc seemed the most enthusiastic and her passion for music showed throughout the entire performance. The quintet started the concert out with Partita composed by Irving Fine in 1948. The song consisted of five movements: Introduction and Theme, Variation, Interlude, Gigue, and the Coda. In the program notes it states that this piece demonstrates Fine’s talent for melody, interest in neoclassical style, and a sound that “seems utterly American”, and after hearing this piece, I agree.…

The musical selection that I chose to listen to was the opening and finale of the third act in Die Walküre (The Valkyrie). Richard Wagner composed this piece in the mid 1850’s and made it part of The Ring of the Nibelung which was a series of four operas performed in four straight days. During the opening of The Valkyrie I listened to what is known as the Ride of the Valkyries. This piece’s leitmotif was very repetitive and had a high energy.…

Attending my first concert, Idina Menzel was my first live performance to ever attend and experience the music live. Menzel performs a selection of songs from her Broadway career, along with original songs from her various solo albums, and her Pop and Rock covers. The group that performed for Menzel was a local Los Angeles band and they played very well for the choices of songs she sang. The performers that played for Menzel was very impressive and seemed they had no problem playing and following the beat of the singer’s voice. There were times when Menzel would stop singing abruptly and they would stop with her at the same time.…

It was the night of September 28th and I could not sleep. I was so nervous because the next morning I had my audition for North Carolina High-School Honors Choir. Although I practiced for weeks and sang for my chorus teacher countless times, I never knew of what could have happened in my five minute audition. I would have to warm up and sing an excerpt of the audition piece “Sing Ye to the Lord.” Then I would have 60 seconds to study an 8-measure line of sight singing.…

This performance differed from others because the overall mastery of the performances stayed at the highest level consistently. The opera truly demonstrated the impressive ability of professional singers to strike high notes, articulate clearly, resonate sound throughout the building, and maintain pitch-perfect quality. The musical pieces that provided the most curiosity to the viewer was any work involving Captain Ahab. Jay Hunter Morris did an incredible job expressing not only the emotions of a maniacally obsessed Captain, but also the complete engagement to direct the energy on stage to the characters. Two of Broadway’s most talented voices emerged from the hit musical, “Wicked.” Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth both had been in broadway shows long before but wicked was the one that blew them into stardom. The musical displays numerous singing acts that tell the story of a girl who grew up slightly different from the rest and a stereotypical popular girl that tried to help her gain her confidence. Idina and Kristen’s voices are like no other in the musical because their voices bring our qualities in their character that complement the character so well.
