Tyler Perry Accomplishments

Tyler Perry was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, as Emmitt Perry Jr. The son of Willie and Emmitt Perry, Sr. One of four children, he had a difficult childhood, suffering years of abuse at the hands of his father, who worked as a carpenter. It appears that Tyler Perry’s father was a no-nonsense kind of parent. He once described his father as a man "whose answer to everything was to beat it out of you." As a child, Perry once went so far as to attempt suicide trying to escape his father. Later, Perry was able to escape his abusive home life by going to church with his mother. Perry also had his first name changed from Emmitt to Tyler.
Tyler Perry dropped out of high school and later in life earned a GED. Perry held a series of unfulfilling jobs before discovering his true passion of; writing, acting, producing and directing. Perry’s career was inspired by a comment on a episode of the Oprah Winfrey's talk show.
