In 2007 Hicks was the newspaper photographer of the year, which was given to him by the Missouri School of Journalism's Pictures of the Year International contest. He also got the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting in 2009, which he shared with The New York Times team. He has worked a lot for the war coverage of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iraq. To get close to the field experience, he has worked in the main area of the war. In 2010, the New York University as the Top Ten Works of Journalism of the Decade designated his photos from the hostilities in Iraq and Afghanistan, along with his close collaborators C.J.
