Tyler Hicks was born on 9th July 1969. He did his schooling from Staples High School in 1988 and also went to Boston University's College of Communication. He earned a degree in Journalism from Boston University in 1992. He works as a staff photographer at The New York Times. He is basically an American photojournalist, but he was established in Kenya. Hicks was a freelance photographer before established in Africa and operated for newspapers in North Carolina and Ohio as well. He has also worked in countries like Libya, Syria, India, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Lebanon, Israel, Gaza, Chechnya, Bosnia, Lebanon, and South Sudan (Bing).

He usually works on foreign concerns and covers breaking news mostly. He is one of the most well-known breaking news photographers in the United States and has covered lots of conflict and

In 2007 Hicks was the newspaper photographer of the year, which was given to him by the Missouri School of Journalism's Pictures of the Year International contest. He also got the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting in 2009, which he shared with The New York Times team. He has worked a lot for the war coverage of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iraq. To get close to the field experience, he has worked in the main area of the war. In 2010, the New York University as the Top Ten Works of Journalism of the Decade designated his photos from the hostilities in Iraq and Afghanistan, along with his close collaborators C.J. Chivers and Dexter Filkins. Hicks have also received a George Polk Award for Foreign Reporting in the year 2011.
