My husband and I have had this conversation already. If one of us is diagnosed with a terminal illness and we meet the criteria we both agreed, we would die with dignity. Most people see this as a selfish act, but it’s not. Why would you want to remember one of your loved ones in this kind of a state? I know I wouldn’t want our future children and even grandchildren to see us like that. I wouldn’t want them to remember their mother or father, grandma or grandfather, suffering and becoming unrecognizable. That’s what happened with my grandfather and my husband’s grandmother. Making that kind of a decision has got to be one of the toughest things she’s ever done. She is a hero. Brittany is spending the rest of her time here by traveling and being surrounded by her loved ones. That’s the life I want before I die. I would spend my last days here doing everything that I dreamt of doing. I would travel anywhere and everywhere and surround myself with the people that I cared about the most. My days would be full of meaning instead of worrying about everything. Brittany Maynard said that she lives life the way she wants to and that she sets little goals every day and takes one day at a time. That’s exactly what I would do. Don’t sweat the small stuff and enjoy your time with you loved ones. People need to really open their eyes to see that euthanasia isn’t a bad thing, but it’s a great thing! Allowing someone who is going to be taken by a terminal illness to have some form of dignity isn’t wrong. I wouldn’t want to see my family members suffer if they didn’t want to.
