Spotting the differences in the 2 versions of the Lightning Thief
Rick Riordan’s hit Percy Jackson series has become one of the most popular and best selling novels in the world since it hit shelves in 2005. After five years of praise the book was adapted into a movie in 2010. While watching the movie I noticed many differences in the story in the movie and the book, some of these were minor changes that might have been used to explain the backstory or powers of a character, other changes weren’t so minor which changed the story progression. After comparing and contrasting the movie and book I have found four differences which stand out the most. I will be explaining my take on the difference and their purposes. In the movie Percy finds himself lost on his quest, until Ares the god of war appears after hearing rumors of Percy’s noble quest and his incredible strength. As they eat at the restaurant Ares has a proposal, if Percy can get Ares’s shield back Ares will give Percy the location of the underworld, and info on his mother. So Percy, Annabeth, and Grover adventure to a run down water park where they are supposed to find the tunnel of love. The tunnel of love was actually a tunnel of death set up by the god Hephaestus in order to stop Ares from going out with his wife Aphrodite. So Hephaestus steals Ares’s shield in attempt to lure Ares into the trap. But Ares knew it was a trap so he had Percy go inside. After retrieving Ares’s shield Percy and his friends activate the traps. Percy and his friends had to shut down the ride in order to escape from the evil cupids. Still in the movie a little bit later Percy is confronting Hades about stealing the lightning bolt. Of course Hades denies it, but shockingly he’s telling the truth. Percy actually has the bolt, but when did he get possession of it, he didn’t steal it Ares gave it to him in the shield. Percy is shocked, no wonder Ares gave him his shield, Are’s intentions were to start a war amongst the gods and he needed someone else to do it for him in order to not get caught. In the book Percy meets Ares gets the shield but returns it in exchange for a backpack and information. “Ares slung a blue nylon backpack off his handle bars and tossed it to me,”(243). This is what Ares gave them instead of the shield, but the backpack also had the bolt hidden inside of it. Next Percy confronts Hades,
