The two types of violence that are most commonly seen in works of literature are: violence of a character with himself or with another character and the second type is violence that the author creates for the characters in the writing, in order to ensure the plot progresses well. Fifty-six proud signatures on the Declaration of Independence sent a message to King George III of England and the rest of the world that his system of oppression and unfair punishments levied on the colonists was intolerable and abusive. Yet millions of people were still oppressed, denied legal rights such as due process, and received unfair punishments for nearly two centuries in the proud new country. Within the world today, many people debate what true justice is. In To Kill a Mockingbird for example, there are many varying opinions on what they believe is right and wrong. The Tom Robinson case is hotly debated, with some believing that since he is a black man he is a liar and must be convicted, while others, like Atticus, defend Tom because they know he is an innocent decent human being who is telling the truth. However, the very idea of justice in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is expressed in the opinions of Atticus, the outcome of the Tom Robinson trial, and the death of Bob Ewell.…

Adversity is a state of continued difficulty or hardship that a person may experience. Both “A Time To Kill” directed by Joel Schmaucher and “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee present characters that face adversity and have different methods of dealing with the situation they face. Some submit to adversity, like Lucien Wilbanks and Arthur ‘Boo’ Radley. Others respond using societies provided systems, such as the law, like Jake Brigance and Tom Robinson do. Non-violent resistance is used by Deputy Willie Hastings and Atticus Finch as a way of dealing with adversity, while Carl-Lee Hailey and Bob Ewell deal with their adversity by using violence.…

One of the characters, Tom Robinson, was an African American man convicted of rape. When he went to court he was in a bad position because he was against a white biased jury. This is a problem because if the jury does not like african americans, then Tom robinson will be found guilty in every way even if he is completely innocent. The white bias is shown when people threaten Atticus for taking up the case, even though he is trying to do the right thing by defending Tom. Later on the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was a revolutionary step in the right direction for black people…
