If a student were to be in their dorm rooms or come to class either drunk or high from drugs, then the dorm monitor or teacher could contact the campus police and inform them of the situation. After, the campus police would arrive, they could administer a breathalyzer and or drug test on the student to show evidence of the accusation. From then the campus police could either issue a campus level citation, or alert the police department, or both. If the police department if called, the police officer would charge the student with either a misdemeanor or felony depending on the severity of other situations that are involved. Formal control would be an effective way to have control of this situation and to provide a deterrence to for the other students that would try to break the rules. Informal control is society’s expressed norms and customs without stating any rules or written laws. Formal control would have more ways and forms of punishments to have other students to deter from breaking the rules. Since informal control punishment is only socially effective, it doesn’t act as great of a deterrence to everyone as would the formal control punishments of having legal troubles. Also, the use of formal control would have outside agencies that would not be effected by reporting the rules that have been broken, so there would be no way of not having the punishment given to
