Aristotle's 3 Types Of Friendship Analysis

According to Aristotle there are three types of friendships that exist between two people, although not all of them are equal, they are all good. The first is friendship based on utility, the second is based on pleasure and the third type is friendship is based on goodness. E.M. Forster Where Angels Fear to Tread, shows us a story where we see Aristotle’s three different types of friendship. Friendship is a necessity in our lives. It is a mutual relationship of goodness between two people. Without friendship there really is no way to live, a person needs a companion socially, emotionally and to have a bond with someone. This friendship is seen between Gino and his son. Goodness is when you want the best for each other. The relationship between father and son is an unequal relationship because the son cannot love back. However we learn from Aristotle that people of unequal standings can achieve a friendship of goodness. This relationship can still have a friendship because in friendship loving is more important than being loved. It is more honorable to give the love than to receive it. Gino loves his son with all his heart and intends to raise his child even though the baby does not love him in return. These three types of friendships that Aristotle describes are portrayed in Forsters Where Angels Fear to Tread and explains to us the meaning of each one. We can see them through all the different relationships seen throughout the book. Friendship is a necessity and we need it to achieve our goals and to have a companion by your side.
