Conflict Management In Nursing

Conflict management is most often an issue in the work place, however in the nursing field managing conflict or differences is always a factor in decision-making and care giving. Making ethical decisions based on what the patient wants, family wants, and what the policies say can be challenging when making decisions. Myself, who has only worked in a nursing home setting has seen conflict between upper management, lower management, and family. Looking into ways of how nursing homes find ways to have job satisfaction was interesting to me as it relates directly to my current job. Task-orientated leadership style involves planning daily activities, clarifying roles, and monitoring the overall operation; so employees can provide the best care to their residents. Where as relationship-oriented leader style focuses on supporting and developing needs of employees and giving recognition to employees who do great work (Havig, 2011). Having routine plans for the facility on how an employee should go about their daily duties but meeting the facilities requirements can be tough, so rewarding employees at all levels is great to keep everyone satisfied with their …show more content…
While both leadership styles lead to job satisfaction, task-oriented had the strongest effect (Havig, 2011). At the ward-level staff varied on which leadership style they favored to help their ward work together. Staff stability had a direct effect on job satisfaction, and where there was lower stability task-oriented leadership was favored. The study also showed that staff in nursing homes are not strong in the area of self-directedness, therefore a task-oriented leadership style worked better for them. Also, staff in nursing homes are highly dependent upon each other to perform tasks and having a task-oriented leader giving direction would be helpful in this situation (Havig, 2011). An individual staffs ' perception of workload and leadership style was the overall leading factor of which style was favored. While both types of leadership styles worked in nursing homes, task-oriented was favored and should be used more in nursing homes (Havig, 2011).
