Sloths are one of the slowest mammals. They are so slow that alge actually grows on their fur. The algae is great for camouflage because sloths are almost always habitating in trees. Sloths do well in trees because of their 3 to 4 inch long claws. They live in trees because they are able to move faster in them. When they fall onto the ground, their only defense is to bite and scratch against predators. Two toed Sloths live in the South American rainforest with an abundance of trees and water sources. If the sloth would fall from a tree and land in a river or lake, they could actually swim really well by stroking their arms.
