First off, in "Two Sunflowers Move in the Yellow Room" Nancy Willard uses lots of personification. The first line of the poem "Ah, William we're weary of weather, said the sunflowers shining with dew" is an example of personification because flowers can't speak. This line suggests that the sunflowers are tired of the weather and the problems they are having since the sunflowers are thought of as human. The next line in the poem is "Our traveling habits have tired us, Can you give us a room with a view?" This line is also an example of personification because sunflowers can't travel. Additionally, this line indicates that the sunflowers want a change and a new place to stay. This relates to humans because humans have problems that they eventually get tired of and they want change and a new beginning. Once the sunflowers or the humans, are moved they have new surroundings and they are now in a happier place because they are where they want to be, which is by the sun. Teasdale begins the story with "And frogs in the pools singing at night, And wild plum trees in tremulous white;" These lines use personification to explain how peaceful and soothing nature is. Furthermore, later on in the poem it says "Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree, If mankind perished utterly;" Sara Teasdale personifies the bird and tree to say that they wouldn't care if mankind is gone forever. Additionally, when humans are introduced into the story the poem darkens. The last line of the poem is "And Spring herself when she woke at dawn, Would scarcely know that we were gone." Personification is also used here to get the theme across because it suggests that once winter ends and humans have perished, spring won’t even notice that mankind was even there in the first place. Spring here is personified to example humans and how they don't notice when another person dies. The author is trying to explain that this isn't the way humans are supposed to live, because she expresses that humans are a bad thing in the poem. The poem explains that nature will move on with or without human interaction. Therefore, both poems use personification to help get their themes
