Some people may think that they have insomnia because they have trouble sleeping at night or they feel as if they can’t sleep at all. Insomnia is a complicated condition in which falling asleep or staying asleep is difficult. The word insomnia is Latin and means “no sleep”. Waking up often and having trouble going back to sleep characterize it. There are two types of insomnia, primary and secondary insomnia, in primary this means that an individual is having problems sleeping but it is not directly associated with any other health condition or problem. In the secondary state this is where sleeping is still a problem but it deals with a health condition such as asthma, depression or heartburn. Sometimes insomnia can last only a few days and go away on its own especially, when it is obvious due to a certain event that is going to or might have happened in your life. For example a painful breakup or a up coming presentation that you have to do for your final grade in a class. Insomnia is usually tide to a psychological or medical issue. Psychological problems can cause the person to have anxiety and depression these are the two main causes of chronic insomnia.
Anyone can suffer from insomnia it is more common in women than in men, the elderly are more at risk for insomnia than the younger generation (Simon, H 2012). The only person who can diagnose you to have insomnia are doctors, it is based on a list of questions and information about your sleeping patterns. They may ask questions such as, how long does it take you to fall asleep at night? How many times during the night you do you wake up? Do you experience daytime fatigue? Your physician may also ask you to keep a diary and record your sleep

Sleep hygiene is one of them and it is considered to be one important step in controlling the disease. It helps establish a routine that can assist you in controlling the disease. Another example would be setting a permanent time you should go to sleep. This would help with the treatment because it will exercise your mind telling you that it is time to sleep, just as you would set a bedtime for a child. Limiting your caffeine intake and regulating your meals at a certain time can also be effective. Behavior therapy methods may be a helpful approach as well like relaxing and
